Today being Monday and Monday being the hardest day of the week, I thought it would be nice to go easy and get familiar with a few new expressions that may refer to your weekend as well. The words are bad, unacceptable in a number of social interactions, yet they are of utility. Check out a few expression for being under the influence of booze.
To be drunk
After consuming a quantity of alcoholic beverages, we may find ourselves behaving in a different way than usual. We become braver, more direct, louder and less coordinated, depending on the amount taken. The English, just like everyone else have a fancy of drinking, so it is no surprise that there are a few expressions which are synonymous with the term that you already know.
To be shitfaced
Being very-very drunk: blank spots in memory, speech disorders, disorientation, uncontrolled movements, foul and/or ungrammatical language. The phrase means that one’s face looks like shit i.e., really bad.
Last night Gabrielle and Rhonda went clubbing with the intention of having one drink and a nice chat, but ended up being shitfaced instead.
Why is your MSN-nick SF?
Because I’m shitfaced all the time..
To be pissed
In British English, this term means to be deeply drunk, however in American English it just means that one is incredibly angry. Be careful when you use this expression: your reader might get confused [especially if he/ she is shitfaced]. To play it safe you may say ‘to piss somebody off’ for angering a person.
Last night I got so pissed I fell asleep on the commuter’s train and woke up in the park in Gödöllő.
I really can make him pissed in five seconds: all I need to mention is dating his mom a few times.
To be smashed
To be heavily intoxicated by a large quantity of liquor.
By the time I got to Esther’s birthday party Dylan was smashed beyond the point of repair.
To be wasted
To go into a state where you are useless for any social interaction due to the drinks you had. Refers to the value you currently represent i.e., trash.
I’d like to help, but I’m completely wasted
To be wrecked
To feel destroyed and demolished due to the booze that was inputted. The phrase refers to the end state of the drinking: the person looks like ruins.
Charlie and I decided to go all in: 6 tequilas, 8 beers, a spritzer and a half each and two more vodkas. This resulted in us both being grossly wrecked.
To get hammered / to be hammered
When the feeling you get after a serious session of drinking is similar to being hit in the head by a large hammer. Not very pleasant.
Oh my, I was so hammered I had to disconnect the phone and send my cat over to the neighbors’ just to ease the headache off a little.
Tipsy
Girls who drink might want to stick with a milder expression. Tipsy means someone had a little bit to drink and the alcohol has a very light effect on him/ her. When one is tipsy he/ she smiles more and might be a little more talkative. All in all, this is a fine state to be in, and also is the lightest of the conditions mentioned above.
I like to be tipsy, but I always stop there: girls who flip over this point are not very lady-like anymore.
Hopefully these expressions will make you a more sophisticated speaker of English when it comes to the description of last night... So, which one fits your weekend? :)
