Irregular Verbs - this you must know!

Irregular verbs are one of the few parts of English that really makes students go mad: they are unpredictable, nasty and, well, irregular. Help Me English, however, says irregulars are not scary monsters you should fear, rather they are words that separate the weak users of the language from the powerful. Learn the important irregulars and speak like a boss!

(The document is available to all HME students upon demand, also it is down-loadable from my Dropbox ]Text library > HME written resources > HME_irregular_verbs].)

One Dictator Minus - Kim Jong Il on The Hungry Beast

Kim Jong Il is dead. He was is as dead as a door-nail*. Watch The Hungry Beast video channel's summary of his character with an animation-sequence that makes the Aussie accent a notch more understandable. I made a transcription and a glossary for you, these can be read below. Peace!

Meet Kim Jong Il, supreme leader of North Korea, the world's most captive nation. The slave-state, where famine is the norm, 49 million people are trapped in their homes every night without electricity. An old-school dictator, the reclusive Kim mixes repression with myth-making and delusions of grandeur. North Korean children are taught that his birth was heralded by a spontaneous double-rainbow, a new star and a giant talking iceberg. Apparently many also believe that he controls the weather. But, that is not Kim's only magic. According to state textbooks Kim does not produce urine or feces. His official biography insists that Kim Jong Il is the world's greatest golfer routinely scoring 3 or 4 holes-in-one every time he plays.

Kim Jong Il is also prime to dictatorial whim. It is claimed that in 1989 Kim cleansed the entire capital, Pyongyang of short people. He also imprisoned family members of convicts, believing the stain of criminality persists for 3 generations.

North Koreans live in poverty with 68% of the country's population living on food rations and one in three children malnourished. Meanwhile flight- phobic Kim reportedly air-lifts lobsters into his armored train when he travels. Kim also likes a drink: Hennessy Cognac say that in 1993 and 1994 the dictator was the company's biggest single client.

But Kim Jong Il is not impervious to his people's needs. In 2006 he announced the plan to import and breed giant rabbits to feed the poor. He then discovered that they produced less food than they consumed, but Kim still bought 12.

When not starving or imprisoning people Kim loves to create. His biography says he's composed 6 operas   and stages elaborate musicals. He's also a movie-buff, author of 'On The Art of Cinema'. And in 1978 Kim had a South Korean film director Shin Seng Ok and his wife  kidnapped. They were held captive for 8 years and forced to make propaganda movies, all of which credit Kim as executive producer. Best known is Pulgasari, which is basically Godzilla, as capitalism and made out of rice. Kim Jong Il, dictator, myth-maker and jailer. It would all be funny, if it wasn't so sad…

A Concise Dictionary of Opposites

Good news to all Help Me English students: I have finally finished compiling the dictionary most of you already know about - opposites. In this (lengthy) piece of text you will find hundreds of word pairs organized in a very simple manner: word - opposite | Hungarian meaning. The text is alphabetically organized and is composed to be printer-friendly, as possible. This document is 'concise' because it only contains essential word pairs and no transcendent mumbo-jumbo... :)

All Help Me English students get free access to the document via the HME Dropbox library!

Cheers!

Angolul tudni kell: Fordítói Terrorizmus

Gurulás a Mélyben
ne alulbecsüld a dolgokat amiket én akarok csinálni

A sebek a te szerelmedből emlékeztetnek nekem mi
Ők tartanak engem gondolkodni hogy mi majdnem mind megettük,
a sebek a szerelmedből, ők elhagynak engem, nem lélegeznek
nem tudok segíteni érezni
mi lehetett volna megennünk mindent
gurulás a mélyben
könnyek gonna esés, gurulás a mélyben.
megetted a szívemet a kezedben
te gonna kívánni te sooha nem ettél volna ismerni engem
és te játszottad verni
könnyek gonna esés, gurulás a mélyben. [...]

Help Me English meets Harry Potter!

Upon some demand I gave in and decided to get familiar with the Harry Potter saga, which I had no previous connection with. At present I'm reading the books and simultaneously watching the film adaptations, to become perfectly familiar with the arc of the story. HME students thus get access to the HP books via Dropbox and hopefully I can also provide the films in the near future.

I strongly recommend reading the book for those, who are keen on the films as the authress applies nicely built sentences, that are understandable, yet carry good-to-know words and phrases; excellent study-material!

Happy Birthday: MORRO!

Help Me English hereby congratulates MORRO, who had his birthday last week. I might have been a little late, but the compensation was well worth it: we had cake and juice at the beginning of the lesson, which really amped up MORRO's otherwise  somewhat gloomy mood. Again: Happy birthday to you my student! :)

Good Laptop, Bad Laptop

A homework I've recently given to one of my student was to write an essay about good and bad laptops. As she was just about to buy a new computer for herself, this was relevant. She submitted her essay today, which was fair, with minor mistakes, but I decided to show my readers my solution in just above 600 words.

The task: "Write an essay about what difference between good laptop and bad laptop is. Make your writing informational, comparative and not too long."

My solution:

Good Laptops and Bad Laptops

By present day, the first decade of the 21st century has passed and laptops have become synonymous with the cyberspace platform of modern humans. We use our laptops (may they be netbooks, tablets, macbooks, notebooks, etc.) for managing our business, handling our mail, over viewing our finances, connecting our social life and governing our culture and hobbies. Thus we could safely state that laptops have become essentials, „limbs” of modern day man.

What exactly is a laptop? The first real, notebook-shaped portable computer was introduced in 1979, and hasn’t changed too much in its core concept: a computer, a screen, an input interface and some memory and an operation system that one can carry around, and work with outside the office environment. This is achieved by the use of a built-in battery, thus the user of the computer is (temporarily) independent of the power network.

Today, a good quality laptop typically features a color screen, displaying a number of millions of colors. Also, for the sake of discrete operation, sound systems have been installed that can be used either aloud or with headphones.  A modern laptop can connect to wireless internet networks [i.e. WLAN] and provides its user with a minimum of 2 hours of continuous work. A good quality laptop can run several tasks parallel and doesn’t slow down significantly while doing so.

This is the point where good quality and cheap design starts to differ. A company I prefer to categorize as a ‘low-end’ manufacturer, Fujitsu Siemens typically builds its products on a tight budget. They offer okay-level computers that are housed in poorly designed and built casings. The materials that are used are mainly cheap plastics which tend to squeak, bend, wear and even color after some use. In this respect, a high-quality brand, Apple, follows a different philosophy. Using mainly metals and some glass surfaces, their computers offer a sturdy, massive and elegant visual quality. Macbooks are known to be more durable and resistant to mechanical effects, such as movement, scratching and even occasional free-fall.

Another characteristic of bad or poorly-built laptops is their general speed. A cheap, low-end computer can gradually slow down as the user commands new tasks and opens further programs. It is not untypical to such a laptop slowing down to a grade that makes using practically impossible. On the other side; an expensive and/or well-built configuration will maintain its speed and distribute its resources to make work seam fluent, even if not real-time.

Laptops are about compromise. Designers have to find the golden way between stylish and practical – who would want to use a gold laptop every day? -, engineers must squeeze every part into ever-tinier spaces, and finally, economic experts and marketing divisions must offer the computer at a realistic price, and thus battle the competition. Obviously, cheaper models will present more compromise, while expensive ones provide near-perfect services. Of course, the ultimate compromise is the end price, which the buyer is still willing to pay.

I for one see the present of laptops to be unsustainable in the long-run. I think computers should be reliable, durable, well-made products that assist their owners in their everyday life to the fullest for a good number of years. Knowing that the plastic casing of a computer may crack, or that the screen can go dark or what’s even worse: the battery pack may explode and physically endanger the user is discomforting.
I believe the future will force manufacturers to rethink their concepts and not create products under a specific level of quality, but rather: produce computers that offer acceptable solutions to us, the end users.   [W608]

Why You Must Know English

Help Me English! :)

Me: Hello!
I've purchased a Kindle Keyboard, Wi-Fi, 6" at the beginning of 2011. It arrived perfectly, started up perfectly and functioned perfectly for 4 months, but one day, without specific reason the screen froze on 2/3rd of its area. One third is active, it turns the pages and is able to show the cursor, but reading is impossible as such.
Abhishek: Hello, my name is Abhishek. I'll be happy to help you.
Me: Hello! Thank you! I hope we can resolve this issue.
Abhishek: I am sorry Mészáros that you are facing problems with your kindle.
May I know the order number for you kindle?
your*
Me: Order #: 002-8271184-0425838
Abhishek: I will transfer your chat to an appropriate department so that you can get a replacement for your order.
Me: Okay, and how does this work?
Abhishek: Please stay on the line while your chat is being transferred.
Me: Ah, okay,
thank you for your efforts
Abhishek:It was my pleasure to help you.
A Customer Service Associate will be with you in a moment.
You are now connected to Chaitanya from Amazon.com.
Me: Hello!
Chaitanya: Hello, my name is Chaitanya. I'll be happy to help you today.
Me: Thank you! Are you briefed about my problem, or should I summarize?
Chaitanya: Can you hold for a minute or two while I look in to this for you?
Me: Sure
Chaitanya: Lets get this Kindle issue resolved.
Please slide the power button of the Kindle and let me know the color of the LED.
Me: solid green
than nothing, the last opened page's lower third is on the screen,
while 2 thirds show a sleep screen fragmented by white paralell, vertical lines.
Chaitanya: Let's try and completely reset your Kindle. Restarting the software can solve intermittent problems. First, be sure your Kindle is disconnected from any power source and that the device is turned on.
To reset the Kindle, slide the power switch to the right and hold it there for a full 20 seconds.
Release power switch and wait for reboot screen to appear. The screen should go blank within a few moments, flicker or flash a few times, and then you'll see the main loading screen.
Me: well, it's rebooting,
Chaitanya: Okay. I'll be online.
Me: but the upper 2/3rds of the screen still shows the fragmented screensaver
I can see the progress bar loading,
but the top 2/3rds do not change
Chaitanya: I'm sorry to hear about this.
Was the Kindle exposed to physical pressure that might have caused this?
Me: I'm sorry to experience this... :)
Not that I know of. I carry it in a rubber-silicon case,
and it has never fallen from anywhere, and no one had sat on it either
the body of it looks completely fine,
so I don't think there was mechanical impulse.
Chaitanya: Has the Kindle come into contact with another object or liquid that might have caused the issue?
Me: No, absolutely not
Chaitanya: Okay. I see that your Kindle is still under warranty so I'll go ahead and replace it.
Can I have your shipping address ?
Me: Wow! That would be very nice.
Originally we gave you my office address.
Which I'll do again.
okay,
55 Paulay utca BUDAPEST H-1051, HUNGARY
We're an EU member
Chaitanya: Okay.
Me: so there shouldn't be any problem.
Chaitanya: I'll create the replacement order with charges to avoid any delays in customs.
Once after creating the replacement order I'll issue refund in the same amount on the original order.
Ultimately you'll be getting free replacement.
I hope I'm clear about this.
Me: Two questions [and i'm already very happy with your help]
Chaitanya: You are welcome.
Me:1. the Kindle was originally paid by my colleague, who helped me with ordering. My bank doesn't permit using my card for international purchases, so we launched the ordering from his.
do I need to inform him about this?
Chaitanya: Yes. The original order was placed using MasterCard(12/2013). This card will be charged when we create replacement but I'll also issue refund on the same card on the original order.
Me: That's fine, I'll just contact him, so that he doesn't counter-act.
Chaitanya: The refund will be process in 2-3 business days.
Okay. Shall we go ahead with the replacement process ?
Me: Yes, please!
Chaitanya: Okay. Please wait.
Mészáros, I see that you've removed the MasterCard(12/2013) from your account.
Please add the credit card to your account so that we can process your replacement.
Me: oh
can you please wait a moment while I organize this?
Chaitanya: I'm sorry about this. This system won't let me process the replacement unless I have the same card on your account.
Sure. I'll be online.
Me: Just one more minute please,
Chaitanya: No problem.
I'll be online.
Me: I had to wake up my colleague (it's midnight in Budapest now)
Chaitanya: Okay. If you wish you can contact us again after adding the credit card to your account.
We'll process your replacement right away.
Me: He said it's done.
Can you confirm, so I can send him back to sleep?
Chaitanya: Okay.
Please wait.
For security reasons, we need to update your account information in order to process your replacement. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Sign in here:
2. Enter your credit card or debit card information.
3. Select the shipping address you would like to send your replacement to, under “Select Billing Address.”
This will associate the credit card information to your shipping address allowing me to process the replacement. This will not affect the billing address we have on file and there will be no charge.
Me: I think we're done
Chaitanya: Okay. Please wait.
You need link the MasterCard to below address :
Mészáros Dániel
Paulay Ede u. 55.
Budapest, 1061,
Hungary
I see that they are still not linked.
Can you please do the above process once again ?
Me: Umm. The two addresses match, actually.
You're talking to Daniel Mészáros now, but the card holder is B##### Sz#####. But the address is the same as we work in the same office. :)
okay, he reset the thing.
Could you check now?
Chaitanya: Okay. Please wait.
I'm sorry, I'm still having the problem.
I'll do one thing.
I'll create a new order and after this order is delivered to you I'll issue refund on the order. Is this fine with you ?
Me: Just a moment Chaitanya,
B##### tells me he restarted the profile
can you stand by until he rebuilds it?
Chaitanya: Sure.
Me: okay,
he has redone it
Is there any difference?
Chaitanya: Okay. Please wait while I check this for you.
I'm sorry, I'm still getting the error.
Me: Okay then, so can we take your solution,
that you mentioned earlier?
Chaitanya: Okay. I'll go it as I suggested.
I'll be shipping the Kindle to : Mészáros Dániel
Paulay Ede u. 55.
Budapest, 1061
Hungary
Using MasterCard ending: 9165
Me: perfect!
Chaitanya: Here is your Order ID: 002-2707377-######

The order total is $134.98.
Me: Okay, perfect!

Is there anything else I can help you with today?
Me: I believe we were very successful,
and I thank you for your work!

New Student: Welcome JULIA!

I'm happy to announce that I have a new student! JULIA, the engineer. She approached me and wanted to find a person who can help her climb up a level or two and I think this will happen in foreseeable time! Take it easy JULIA, your training begins next week! ;)

Father's Day

We're somewhat late, but that's okay as long as we're being nice with our elders. Help Me English wishes happy father's day to all dads!

*

Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries and on other days elsewhere. It complements Mother's Day, the celebration honoring mothers.

History
Father's Day is a celebration of fathers inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and maleparenting. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities. The first observance of Father's Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907. It is possible that Clayton was influenced by the first celebration of Mother's Day that same year, just a few miles away. Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her recently deceased father. Unfortunately, the day was overshadowed by other events in the city, West Virginia did not officially register the holiday, and it was not celebrated again. Instead, credit for Father's Day went to Sonora Dodd fromSpokane, who invented independently her own celebration of Father's Day just two years later, also influenced by Jarvis' Mother's Day. Clayton's celebration was forgotten until 1972, when one of the attendants to the celebration saw Nixon's proclamation of Father's Day, and worked to recover its legacy. The celebration is now held every year in the Central United Methodist Church, as the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was torn down in 1922. Fairmont is now promoted as the "Home of the First Father's Day Service".

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents". In 1966, PresidentLyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men and boys who are fathers.

Spelling
Although the name of the event is usually understood as a plural possessive (i.e. "day belonging to fathers"), which would under normal Englishpunctuation guidelines be spelled "Fathers' Day," the most common spelling is "Father's Day," as if it were a singular possessive (i.e. "day belonging to Father"). In the United States, Dodd used the "Fathers' Day" spelling on her original petition for the holiday, but the spelling "Father's Day" was already used in 1913 when a bill was introduced to the U.S. Congress as the first attempt to establish the holiday, and it was still spelled the same way when its creator was commended in 2008 by the U.S. Congress.

Australia
In Australia, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September and is not a public holiday. YMCA Victoria continues the tradition of honouring the role fathers, and father figures play in parenting through the annual awarding of Local Community Father of the Year in 32 municipalities in Victoria. The Father's Day Council of Victoria annually recognise fathers in the Father of the Year Award.

Canada
In Canada, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Father's Day typically involves spending time with one's father or the father figures in one's life. Small celebrations and the giving of gifts may be part of the festivities organized for Father's Day.

Ireland
In Ireland (in both the North and the Republic), Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday.

New Zealand
In New Zealand, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September and is not a public holiday.

Roman Catholic tradition
In the Roman Catholic tradition, Fathers are celebrated on Saint Joseph's Day, commonly called Feast of Saint Joseph, March 19, though in certain countries Father's Day has become a secular celebration. It is also common for Catholics to honor their "spiritual father," their parish priest, on Father's Day.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
In the United Kingdom, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June and is not a public holiday.
United States of America

In the US, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Other festivities honoring fathers had been held in Fairmont and in Creston, but the modern holiday did not emerge from those.

Modern Father's Day was invented by Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Arkansas, who was also the driving force behind its establishment. Her father, theCivil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis's efforts to establish Mother's Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.
Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson made Father's Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon.

In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by promoting greeting cards and traditionally male-oriented gifts such as electronics and tools. Schools and other children's programs commonly have activities to make Father's Day gifts.

More phone calls are made in the United States during Mother's Day than during Father's Day, but the percentage of collect calls on Father's Day is much higher, making it the busiest day of the year for collect calls.  Also, calls during both Mother's Day and Father's Day tend to last longer.
Father's Day is accompanied by a smaller total number of phone calls, greeting cards and gifts than Mother's Day. It is speculated that this is due to the greater number of households with a mother than households with a father (due to single mothers), to the greater role of mothers in unpaid household labor, and to different personal or societal expectations.
